As part of its plan to promote and encourage diversity within the Embassy and in its work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Embassy staff attended the first discussion on Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 4 December. The lecture was delivered by Professor Ahmet Alibasic, a lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Director of the Centre for Advance Studies.
Professor Alibasic spoke about issues such as:
- historical overview of Islam in BiH,
- characteristics of Islam in BiH,
- the organisational structure of the BiH Islamic Community.
A lively question and answer session followed the lecture. Both UK based and local staff asked Professor Alibasic questions about a variety of issues, such as: women in Islam, youth and religion, and Islam in a secular society.
Reactions to the event were positive. "It was great to take part in the diversity discussion on Islam today and to learn more about one part of Bosnian tradition and culture. Not only that the lecture was informative and interesting, but it also ensured a great start of our Diversity programme in Bosnia," said Jodie Vessey, Chancery Support Officer.
