Sarajevo, January 26th 2018 (MINA) – January 27th, International Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration was held today at the Jewish Municipality in Sarajevo. The ceremony consisted of a prayer for the dead and paying homage to murdered Jews and all other innocent victims of the Holocaust. Raisu-l-Ulama Husein effedi Kavazović and Vice Raisu-l-Ulama Husein effendi Smajić attended the commemoration.
The President of the Jewish Community in B&H, Jakob FInci, reminded that the intention behind the Holocaust was to destroy all Jewish people, that the word Holocaust refers to mass murder, and that it was a most heinous crime because "those who entered the gates of the concentration camps came out through the chimneys of the crematorium."
Among the six million killed were several thousand Jews from B&H, mostly Sephardi Jews who found refuge in B&H after having been prosecuted in Spain in 1492.
Therefore, Finci believes there are plenty of reasons for B&H to keep the memory of the victims of the Holocaust alive. 85% of Bosnian Jews were killed in the Holocaust, as well as numerous Romani people and all those who, as he said, were disliked by the Nazis.
On this occasion, Raisu-l-ulama said:
„It is important for us to remember the victims of the Holocaust, mostly Jews, but also all other nations that were the victims of this large-scale persecution. It is vital that we all understand that we share the same values and we should all live in peace, protecting each other's dignity.", said Raisu-l-Ulama Kavazović.
