The Diploma in Islamic studies

The Diploma in Islamic Studies is 72-hour special program for those who want to know more about Islam in general and Islam and Islamic culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Program is offered in English and Bosnian languages. All classes are held at the historical premises of the Faculty. Lecturers are mainly from the Faculty of Islamic Studies including Dr. Enes Karić, Dr. Fikret Karčić and others. The program is intended for mature English speaking audience who meet the admission requirements. It is designed to provide introductory insight into the knowledge of doctrine, law, history and culture of Islam with special focus on Islam in the Balkans and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This year the program is offered for the eighth time. The Faculty of Islamic Studies will award certificate to participants who successfully complete the course requirements. Participants could follow the course from distance.

The Faculty of Islamic studies

Faculty of Islamic Studies is the oldest and most prestigious institution of higher Islamic education in Europe. It was established in 1977 by the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the Faculty builds upon much longer tradition of higher Islamic learning in Sarajevo which started in 1537 by the establishment of Gazi Husraw-bey Madrasa. The Faculty is also a heir to the Shari'ah School for Shari'ah judges (est. 1887), later the Higher School of Islamic Theology and Shari'ah, whose neo-Moorish styled building is contemporary home to it. In September 2004 the Faculty became an affiliated member of the University of Sarajevo.

In addition to three undergraduate degrees (BA in Islamic Theology, BA in Islamic Pedagogy and BA for Imams), the Faculty offers postgraduate studies at both masters and doctoral levels. So far about 550 male and female students have graduated from the Faculty including 27 at MA and 16 at Ph.D. levels. At present the Faculty employs over 29 teaching staff.
