The European Muslim Union has established a new working office in the centre of the "European City" of Strasbourg with the beginning of the month of June 2009.
The Alsatian metropolis, is seen as the capital of Europe, similarly to Brussels. 16 European institutions including the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Court of Human Rights are based in the city. Strasbourg is equally an economic and cultural centre and a convention, exhibition and university city. It is an attraction for hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
The quarter of Strasbourg named "European City" is architecturally a counterpoint to the famous Old City. The European Parliament, with its 47 member countries, is based "Palais de l'Europe", built in the 1970's, constructed from copper, aluminum, glass and sandstone.
The EMU will publish a regular newsletter (printed and online editions) from its new office. A yearly report is also planned, which will cover the situation of Muslims in individual European countries and in Europe as a whole. The new office will inform Muslims in general and its member organisations, as the case may be, about the work of the different institutions of the European Union related to the Muslims in Europe.
